Software Engineering Manager

If so, we're currently recruiting for a Software Engineering Manager for an established, fast-growing, respected world leader in the Scientific Instrumentation sector. Reporting to the Software Development Director, this is a senior permanent contract position within the company, as they expand further in the UK and internationally.

The position is focused on providing the technical leadership of the software group, consisting of 25 engineers, to delivery a wide-ranging product set that will be used by the scientific research and engineering sectors globally.

Responsibilities

*Providing technical leadership for the Software group and owing the technology associated with software engineering.
*Collaborating closely with cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams including with Project Managers, Product Marketers, and Engineering Managers for the different product ranges to get a clear picture of the priorities for the team.
*Acting as the main technical authority for Software Engineering from Concept through to delivery.
*Carrying out line management of the team, including performance appraisals, one-to-ones, goal setting , health and safety of staff.
*Developing the technical strategy.
*Motivating the team , fostering a spirit of innovation and problem solving.
*Leading the recruitment process, including selection of candidates and interviewing of new engineers.
*Ensuring that products comply with export licenses , product safety regulations and environmental regulations.

Skills and qualifications required

*Degree level in Software Engineering or equivalent or in a relevant science based subject.
*Membership of an appropriate professional institute is desirable ( IET for example)
*Commercial awareness of software, engineering and science combined with expert level of technical competency with several long-term experiences leading the design and development of technologically advanced software products, ideally aimed at the scientific/industrial sectors.
*Leading software teams of 20 people or close size.
*Knowledge /experience of developing Machine Learning and /or IOT solutions would be advantageous.
*Experience of real-time measurement and control is an advantage.
*Working with geographically distributed teams.
*Working to meet commercial deadlines and costs.
*Experience working to ISO9000 and TickIT Plus standards.

Knowledge required

*Windows Programming in C#.Net and ideally visual C
*Agile/Lean Development principles and practices
*SCRUM/Unit testing / TDD, Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS)
*Ideally experience developing scientific or industrial instrumentation software.
*Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
